Banged on the wall and heard whatever it was scamper away. It was a very loud scamper. This was no cute little mousey. A few minutes later, it was back. To put it mildly, I freaked. I turned on all the lights in my house, and several radios at high volume, got dressed and went to work at 4 a.m. Around 7 I called my neighbor. Luckily he was off that day, so I persuaded him to go over to my house and look around in the attic for me. Nice guy that he is, he even turned off all the lights and radios, gave the dogs snacks, and locked up when he left. Neighbors don't come better. Unfortunately, he didn't find anything in the attic, but he put some poison up there and came back a few days later to see that nothing had changed. It hadn't. No more noises, poison undisturbed. We figured I had scared whatever it was off. YEAH!</span><br /><span style="font-size:130%;"></span><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">So I haven't thought much about the fact that I had this poison up in the attic. I don't go up there. Ever. (And I'm sure you all can see where this is going, right?) Last Saturday I came home from running errands and smelled something when I walked in the door. My thought was, "Dang, how in the world did I forget to take out the garbage?" Went and emptied all the trashcans in the house and forgot about it. That night I went out to dinner (more on that later) and when I got home the smell was much stronger. And then the lightbulb went off, there's something in the attic. Well I wasn't going to even consider looking up there at 9:30 at night, so I opened my windows, threw extra blankets on the bed and hoped for the best.</span><br /><span style="font-size:130%;"></span><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">Sunday morning the stench was getting pretty bad. I had another friend climb up there and look around, but no luck, and strangely, no smell in the attic. The thing must be in the walls. Called the wonderful neighbor (who happens to be a carpenter) and asked about trying to get into the walls. He was out of town. Spray lots of air freshener and leave the windows open again for another night. Thank goodness for mild weather.</span><br /><span style="font-size:130%;"></span><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">Monday: The smell is now quite overwhelming. Nice Neighbor has agreed to help me out after work. He walks in and says he can't smell anything! I'm almost wretching. Turns out he has some serious hay fever going on and can't smell at all. A real godsend in this case. We cut some small holes in a few of the walls of my former office (now junk room) and I stick my nose in to see if we can locate the critter, but no luck. We cut bigger holes, still nothing. He finally goes back up in the attic to see if he can track the thing and after 2 hours finally finds one hugmongous (and extremely dead) rat buried deep in the insulation. </span><br /><span style="font-size:130%;"></span><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">The worst part is that having talked to a lot of people about this (or in other words, freaking out all over the place) everyone says, "oh yeah, that happened to me too." It's one of the nice benefits of living in swampland. Oops, I mean The Lowcountry! </span><br /><span style="font-size:130%;"></span><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">One silver lining. I'm going to learn how to repair sheetrock, and I now have a lot of incentive to start my home improvements.</span><br /><span style="font-size:130%;"></span><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">I wonder how hard it would be to enclose my home in a plastic bubble?</span>Wendelenehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00390173211882355104noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-729212420721410141.post-79323955136721177932009-03-16T15:50:00.005-04:002009-03-18T20:16:52.846-04:00Another Start<span style="font-size:130%;"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Sooo</span>...</span><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">After many months of silence, I'm going to try this again. Mostly I've been a <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">conscientious little employee and done my regular work, but I'm going to try taking some of this time to write blog entries too. Not a whole lot that's interesting, which explains the lack of posts. I did start AND finish a stole from Victorian Lace Today. It has the unforgettable name of Scarf with No. 20 edging.<br />Unfortunately this is the only photo I have of it because I took it to ward off the AC. It was so nice to sit under the trees and spend the day talking about fiber with people.<br /><br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcr_cfsCjdjqMIdeflKn04KKCbT-UzOrwGtjMd-09sQl_LoWQvq0afwmRrsRCMe_25GMxxecTG2yfOa4JZhBegiia-WhQhM0CH84UWhLaSvyemQG5BDT2Y_4-u9kx9rXAzOLfxfB8TcnU/s1600-h/sweater.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcr_cfsCjdjqMIdeflKn04KKCbT-UzOrwGtjMd-09sQl_LoWQvq0afwmRrsRCMe_25GMxxecTG2yfOa4JZhBegiia-WhQhM0CH84UWhLaSvyemQG5BDT2Y_4-u9kx9rXAzOLfxfB8TcnU/s200/sweater.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5203966677527799442" border="0" /></a>Another thing I've been working on is a sweater for a friend who is having her first. They are fairly certain it's a girl, so I've taken a chance and am knitting this. I found the pattern on Ravelry. The woman who posted it has modified a pattern she got from Dale of Norway. Unfortunately, it seems she didn't write down exactly how she modified or else she has even worse problems with math than I do, because none of her numbers worked out, so I had to do a lot of figuring and ripping. Also for some reason she made this pretty lace sweater with the button holes set for a boy. Of course being directionally challenged, I didn't realize this until I was finished with the body. So know I'm having to rip out the button bands and switch the button holes to the other side. And of course knit the second sleeve. And be done by next Sunday.<br /><br />This wouldn't be a problem except that <a href="http://www.piccolospoleto.com/schedule/default.aspx?m=5&d=31&perfid=1680">this</a> is also happening next Saturday. That means rehearsals Monday and Thursday evenings. And oh yeah, I have to go to work too. I am taking off next Friday though because we will be rehearsing in downtown Charleston on Thursday night with the orchestra and by the time we finish, and drive back to Summerville I'm going to be way too tired to get up at 5:15 Friday morn. Besides, that way I can finish the sweater.<br /><br />Finally, it looks like I'm going to have to stay in this house a little while longer. My brother Tom (Hi Tom) gave me this gardenia as a congrats for getting a new job. Soon after I decided to buy the house and claimed it was because I needed a place to plant the gardenia. One of the first things I did after moving in was to plant it beside my back door. Amazingly enough, it's gotten a few blooms every year. I thought it might have gotten too cold this winter, but the other day I came out to find this.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRw2UueT2H5xLE6M6n1ER1CxkqlKFppxSvrwWUrnGmIK4fiEFVIu7guzQEb8bd6JLaT_rwVievLkqC2g-1FfwYSoTzQDS9bGX6jAq4QicGeeqnZHvP9IkAZBib-1_oSqv8KvotubqI31c/s1600-h/gardenia+08.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRw2UueT2H5xLE6M6n1ER1CxkqlKFppxSvrwWUrnGmIK4fiEFVIu7guzQEb8bd6JLaT_rwVievLkqC2g-1FfwYSoTzQDS9bGX6jAq4QicGeeqnZHvP9IkAZBib-1_oSqv8KvotubqI31c/s200/gardenia+08.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5203965766994732674" border="0" /></a><br />My plant, I think I'll keep it.</span>Wendelenehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00390173211882355104noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-729212420721410141.post-58084685263896521732008-01-03T17:21:00.000-05:002008-01-07T17:57:08.347-05:00The Obligatory New Year Post<span style="font-size:130%;">So, it's 2008. Big Whoop. OK, I'm not quite that cynical, but New Year's really doesn't do much for me. However, my Christmas vacation was pretty interesting this year.<br /><br />It started out with the flight to Wisconsin. In extreme winds and turbulence. And oh yes, I forgot to bring a coat. I mean really, it was in the 60's when I left my house at about 4:45 am. Why would I want a coat? Temperature in Milwaukee was in the high 20's I believe with a wind chill well below 0. Oh, THAT'S why I wanted a coat! Luckily my brother has a collection of odd coats in his closet, and one of them fit me.<br /><br />Christmas Eve brought a real houseload to my parents. All told we had my parents, 4 brothers and sisters, 2 spouses, 6 nieces and nephews, 1 great niece, 1 great nephew, and me. One spouse had to work and one nephew is in China. Add the fact that few of us know how to speak with inside voices and you get massive chaos. And I wouldn't have it any other way. Ok, maybe we could use the inside voices to keep my head from exploding, but you can't have everything! Here are a few of the nieces and nephews and one<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi3_n3P5XADI9CeOGmnfmL5nPnlJQT1yQOqJf5BFZzdrVobJ3kirTHBRZsj2BhnNFJK-yT0F07ugJqeUV2emFtOO7vx8RaVJRSo9rBrGscqwpRO_PaRwrW2LELKnZ0M7RN9axx2y0Rk3A/s1600-h/Elizabeth.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi3_n3P5XADI9CeOGmnfmL5nPnlJQT1yQOqJf5BFZzdrVobJ3kirTHBRZsj2BhnNFJK-yT0F07ugJqeUV2emFtOO7vx8RaVJRSo9rBrGscqwpRO_PaRwrW2LELKnZ0M7RN9axx2y0Rk3A/s200/Elizabeth.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152871883029326834" border="0" /></a> great niece<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid9XX2EVOHlFJ5hUJ2hndUXSm2BJHHO1C3rvX1-Sm4aNnoyi4A_LEn7VbUFrxYuAQeyTUcSverhmVG4g-oG3yF9wiJTR5chbjhD_yCW9NpSZjk33NaEG03UijVJK6SyT5Yx39vq7pHYXk/s1600-h/Chris_Sarah_Sam.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid9XX2EVOHlFJ5hUJ2hndUXSm2BJHHO1C3rvX1-Sm4aNnoyi4A_LEn7VbUFrxYuAQeyTUcSverhmVG4g-oG3yF9wiJTR5chbjhD_yCW9NpSZjk33NaEG03UijVJK6SyT5Yx39vq7pHYXk/s200/Chris_Sarah_Sam.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152871758475275234" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguhmbw0YpUwSdYf3GRpivsVoep7r8KksU07-dxLsnsiMEs9iprFpa07h7v_GZC46oioqZWJ6Rhh2F7DZtUryeZKNORx1IBTO6B3hIAYygk7Ws8VIYKgU0Ch-xyVmiOvcdLe2qm1etmpTU/s1600-h/Christy.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguhmbw0YpUwSdYf3GRpivsVoep7r8KksU07-dxLsnsiMEs9iprFpa07h7v_GZC46oioqZWJ6Rhh2F7DZtUryeZKNORx1IBTO6B3hIAYygk7Ws8VIYKgU0Ch-xyVmiOvcdLe2qm1etmpTU/s200/Christy.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152871582381616082" border="0" /></a><br />I presented my younger sister with the Mediterranean Lace shawl. No photo, too many people in the way. She has been a great support for me through the years and especially since Paul died. When I started knitting the shawl Paul challenged me to finish it in time for a big night out for our un-anniversary in January. After he died, I let it lay for quite a while then decided I had to finish it. But I really didn't want the reminder of what should have been laying around the house. This was the perfect solution. I got to thank her for all she's done with a beautiful piece of lace and exorcised the ghost at the same time. Now I just hope her husband takes her somewhere really special to show it off. That's a hint Dave!<br /><br />To keep myself sane in a houseload of<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilZ-ZmKZdNWDkQ2MrN9Ml0qOxQnWPg_Ihncg0M0nNizc-1tM5_lmlqQTUfAndf5CF3jhgpK3MRTFRosp0d7d_xVPmwDbGY6SN4XMNn1Q8r1TlKQFpCxlXeVxaxvMjB19-iVF9vcgt-6D0/s1600-h/Monkeys.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilZ-ZmKZdNWDkQ2MrN9Ml0qOxQnWPg_Ihncg0M0nNizc-1tM5_lmlqQTUfAndf5CF3jhgpK3MRTFRosp0d7d_xVPmwDbGY6SN4XMNn1Q8r1TlKQFpCxlXeVxaxvMjB19-iVF9vcgt-6D0/s400/Monkeys.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5152868661803854754" border="0" /></a> people, I knit. I managed to knit 1 entire <a href="http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter06/PATTmonkey.html">Monkey</a> and about 3/4's of it's mate. Here's a really bad photo. I keep forgetting to take pictures when it's still light. The yarn is <a href="http://www.littleknits.com/products.php?cat=414">Trekking Pro Natura</a> 75% wool, 25% bamboo. So far they're holding up well, they've been on my feet quite a bit in the last 2 weeks. I think I'll definitely try it again.<br /><br />The biggest fun was the 7+ inches of snow that fell the day we travelled home; or </span><span style="font-style: italic;font-size:130%;" >tried</span><span style="font-size:130%;"> to travel home. I kept checking the airline website during the day. They were cancelling flights right and left, but mine was still on. So we started the 90 mile journey through the snow. I'm sure glad I wasn't driving. It's been way too many years since I've done real winter driving. We got there exactly on time, to see my flight had been cancelled. However, my sister and her family did get out and home right on time. I ended up in a hotel for the evening, and flew out the next morning.<br /><br />I think next year I'll drive.</span>Wendelenehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00390173211882355104noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-729212420721410141.post-19303268119494483022007-11-27T12:51:00.000-05:002007-12-22T13:55:08.699-05:00Paying it forward<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjqzTxGBlIihJkQ5-UaxCG3xSyBZaRzmSnx1OM-c78DFtaHz8pzNTZLsZ1IukNCTR0EHNxXkd8q0gOxaB49_MmXFsB4SgKAK4nwEK-LASevTJGwAomF_SAuFAzCcuegGSlypR9lLpdsbc/s1600-h/Macomber+Loom+001.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjqzTxGBlIihJkQ5-UaxCG3xSyBZaRzmSnx1OM-c78DFtaHz8pzNTZLsZ1IukNCTR0EHNxXkd8q0gOxaB49_MmXFsB4SgKAK4nwEK-LASevTJGwAomF_SAuFAzCcuegGSlypR9lLpdsbc/s200/Macomber+Loom+001.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5146871693457730418" border="0" /></a><br /><div><span style="font-size:130%;">Santa came early to my house, look what he brought! I made this for my <a href="http://singersofsummerville.org/">Singers of Summerville</a> performances. It turned out very nice. I made both the body and sleeves a bit longer. I wanted more of a jacket length. I added one extra pattern repeat on the body and I can't remember how much on the sleeves. If there's one thing I dislike, it's too sleeves that are too short. The pattern says to just make the cuffs deeper to adjust sleeve length, but I was adding a couple inches so that would have looked a little ridiculous. I think I added two pattern repeats and the sleeves are just a tad long, but look great when I'm holding my music up. Definitely a success.</span></div><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /></span><div><span style="font-size:100%;">So after watching the game and blocking the shawl, it was time for Thanksgiving dinner. I didn't really want to go to friends and get into a big family type thing this year, I think it'll be a few years before I stop associating Thanksgiving with Paul's death, so I bought a nice roasting chicken and experimented with twice baked potatos. For me, this was a major cooking experience. It all came out very nice. I set the table with my nice blue dishes, lit a candle, put on some nice music and enjoyed my meal.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQnVw1-1kBu0_gBRH6BHAINFq8GpKSh6lsGDBZguBPnR2evcngshcaXUO_vONIV2PxbeOw59f8XIAIYL8lbc0g9ZUycoqsVS3ONmpXbsTgBSvL5tDz_16tBkY00tNR__GQywciG-tHR0w/s1600-h/Dinner.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQnVw1-1kBu0_gBRH6BHAINFq8GpKSh6lsGDBZguBPnR2evcngshcaXUO_vONIV2PxbeOw59f8XIAIYL8lbc0g9ZUycoqsVS3ONmpXbsTgBSvL5tDz_16tBkY00tNR__GQywciG-tHR0w/s200/Dinner.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137664030954701922" border="0" /></a></span> </div><span style="font-size:100%;">And Sophie got a plate too. They keep rushing over when I come out, looking for protection from the horror that has invaded the yard.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlVJzhZVJqlXFVzjBYHsymTDlIHaZSeEzWy-nPulXG1z8LSfM-MH0cdS8yLy8TO-RWTVX43JBl0jMEKrZ-sg13UN5z2rOPf3QZZ6QK6H5U5xA6zV7LrBgb27iyBx9P9YCc7tRhHaL0aZg/s1600-h/Leaves.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlVJzhZVJqlXFVzjBYHsymTDlIHaZSeEzWy-nPulXG1z8LSfM-MH0cdS8yLy8TO-RWTVX43JBl0jMEKrZ-sg13UN5z2rOPf3QZZ6QK6H5U5xA6zV7LrBgb27iyBx9P9YCc7tRhHaL0aZg/s320/Leaves.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137666891402921170" border="0" /></a></span> </div><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /><br /></span><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /><br /></span><div><span style="font-size:100%;">I believe they're called leaves.</span> </div>Wendelenehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00390173211882355104noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-729212420721410141.post-69861365287636852692007-11-12T08:20:00.000-05:002007-11-12T10:04:21.311-05:00In Honor of a Veteran<span style="font-size:130%;">One thing that has always bothered me about patriotic holidays, we seem to forget that there are many who have served who did not see combat. They may not have died for their country, but they still dedicated their lives to it.<br /><br />Paul served over 19 years in the Air Force. He would have done more, but his body gave up on him, at the age of 41 he had a disabling stroke. Over the next 10 years he worked with the local Disabled American Veterans chapter. He went to the Veterans hospital and gave out cookies and soda to the patients - and being Paul he also gave out a lot of bad jokes and smiles. For several years we went to a local cemetery with the Boy Scouts and helped decorate the graves on Memorial Day. And he always made a point of being present for any ceremonies for the fallen.<br /><br />One of the last things he did was ride on his DAV chapter's float in the Veterans Day parade last year. When he got home he told me he felt he didn't have the right to be up there with men who had served in WWII, Korea, VietNam and the Gulf. It hurt me to hear him belittle his life so.<br /><br />So on Veteran's Day and every day:<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyF8dkiDFnqcd3YBYa-UaRzFOMlykB6x9Lx98lEnDl0IRD_9fv_UmMgUchYOFtEoPGe6V1eo2FJVYdZzTkumlcGugdzQFjtvs7vZhHYIBRrhYNZp-2RGKH11vSJipjq0lGZV8hSRIDbM0/s1600-h/Bang+the+gong+copy.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyF8dkiDFnqcd3YBYa-UaRzFOMlykB6x9Lx98lEnDl0IRD_9fv_UmMgUchYOFtEoPGe6V1eo2FJVYdZzTkumlcGugdzQFjtvs7vZhHYIBRrhYNZp-2RGKH11vSJipjq0lGZV8hSRIDbM0/s320/Bang+the+gong+copy.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131967899481409570" border="0" /></a><br />Not every Vet has served in combat,<br />but every one is a Hero.<br /><br />In Honor of Paul G. Why does it seem that as soon as I began this blog, my life suddenly became too busy to write about? Of course it doesn't help that most of what I'm doing is not overly exciting. Choir rehearsals, board meetings for choir and fiber guild, and trying to reorganize my house.</span><br /></span><br /><br /><a style="font-family: arial;" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmAo3-SQ-pWBuvHhFo-gsPb-rIP01e5TIUCbHzNsoptRy7A60JTIm89hnDN3spc-U6B6-Ncw43jcQESEZ9kyoS1Da-l0Xsp2ZdhpQ5y0uYITNXyQqDclP4wrNxGR_86RHQYEBEuMyLt4k/s1600-h/desk+copy.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmAo3-SQ-pWBuvHhFo-gsPb-rIP01e5TIUCbHzNsoptRy7A60JTIm89hnDN3spc-U6B6-Ncw43jcQESEZ9kyoS1Da-l0Xsp2ZdhpQ5y0uYITNXyQqDclP4wrNxGR_86RHQYEBEuMyLt4k/s200/desk+copy.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5115784017071938418" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-family:arial;">For the past 25 years, I've moved on an average of once every 2 years. I've been in my house 2.5 years. To satisfy my need for change, I'm rearranging pretty much all my furniture. The big move was getting the computer out of the loom room and into my very own home office/library.</span><br /><span style="font-family:arial;">Of course the title is bigger than the room. I have a very small bedroom (not even large enough to hold a double bed) that is now the office. I've "rescued" a nice desk and am putting up lots of shelves to hold my large paperback collection. I've also gotten my hands on some recycled bookcases (yes, I'm cheap, why do you ask?) that I'm going to use in the loom room to help get the stash under control. However, progress is slow. I have the office fairly well under control. One shelf up, new widescreen monitor, more shelves waiting the next trip to Lowe's for screws.</span><br /><br /><a style="font-family: arial;" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWIan6vC7CVpN6tTzMe3oReGwBqT7-0WEgtuGeP_EGvQjl7uEJXZVB0Z1h_Ff40O4elAKNYk4GmNN3RyOSwVDWnJZhXd_jl190GKjhJap0BYBAlE_SCQSdKNBOSI0Di-5aH1zK5w3_wMk/s1600-h/IMG_0342.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWIan6vC7CVpN6tTzMe3oReGwBqT7-0WEgtuGeP_EGvQjl7uEJXZVB0Z1h_Ff40O4elAKNYk4GmNN3RyOSwVDWnJZhXd_jl190GKjhJap0BYBAlE_SCQSdKNBOSI0Di-5aH1zK5w3_wMk/s200/IMG_0342.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5115785790893431682" border="0" /></a><span style="font-family:arial;">And here's the disaster. This year certainly fills the bill. It's pouring out there, with no sign of clearing up for the next few days. Granted, we can use the rain, but I was really wanting to get out there and mow the lawn this weekend. (And if you believe that, I have this bridge I'd like to sell you).</span> <p><span style="font-size:130%;">Meanwhile, I've finally finished fixing the border on the Mediterranean Shawl. I've even added a few rows. Now I'm worried that I won't have enough yarn. I tell you, it's always something.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:130%;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwoLlHwFGeYtI_o1LXDAM_YXNQiHhOMUMayU6ZQgwsuSIV0FP7VPN5j-WSg8tovxzOqLDzevRLQQq9FwcoiaZtw2XWkuEVMzKGOSm0q3MILgrMH08We8esrXJUrT54i3DTb-pNxYywB40/s1600-h/bixby.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwoLlHwFGeYtI_o1LXDAM_YXNQiHhOMUMayU6ZQgwsuSIV0FP7VPN5j-WSg8tovxzOqLDzevRLQQq9FwcoiaZtw2XWkuEVMzKGOSm0q3MILgrMH08We8esrXJUrT54i3DTb-pNxYywB40/s200/bixby.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105324667011323970" border="0" /></a>I've also started something new. This is Bixby. Or at least his coat from last year.</span><span style="font-size:130%;"> Bixby was a Christmas present from my parents this year. He came from <a href="http://www.sawmat.com/">Bramble Wool Farm</a> in Luxemburg, Wisconsin. Near where I grew up and where my parents still live. His owner Julie Guilette has had her wool featured in Spin-Off magazine. Most notably those cute <a href="http://interweave.com/spin/spinoff_magazine/back_issues/Su-06.asp">Estonian sheep puppets</a> on the cover of the Summer 2006 issue.</span> </p> <p><span style="font-size:130%;">Anyway, I have started playing with the fleece, trying to decide how I want to spin it. Since I don't seem to have very good fleece washing skills and this is a pretty clean fleece, I decided to spin it "in the grease". I've been taking a few locks, combing them into a rolag and spinning from there. At first I was getting way too many lumps and bumps but I've forced myself to treadle slower and the results have been pretty even. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:130%;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhev6CRM-ulQQMQ1QkDDKJBHyZXJH1H1pi8mschYfPgBm6darWkKjtCehu5MnX0w_0Grx6QasDkmtcrjTkAw0ehC-y9VgNAahK51XouV9lpkAue-nB4cVsysL-7Yn2WMF29qKVLowxcFMA/s1600-h/IMG_0313.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhev6CRM-ulQQMQ1QkDDKJBHyZXJH1H1pi8mschYfPgBm6darWkKjtCehu5MnX0w_0Grx6QasDkmtcrjTkAw0ehC-y9VgNAahK51XouV9lpkAue-nB4cVsysL-7Yn2WMF29qKVLowxcFMA/s200/IMG_0313.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105324868874786898" border="0" /></a>It's not easy getting good photographs of dark brown yan. But here's my best shot. </span></p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p><span style="font-size:130%;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmR-e4Rws_ULIkrLBeWxxFNNFlskxVbWvsdnniD-ygtcZ4trFdpA1Cx_OCDMW6cR5QCeRTh1PwBIQ6pnlUwjAiW0azXYISrL0DHkjB0JG8drAMv5kj6HkTteHCeqaFS0CFFu2qLQr5JfI/s1600-h/1st+test+skein.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmR-e4Rws_ULIkrLBeWxxFNNFlskxVbWvsdnniD-ygtcZ4trFdpA1Cx_OCDMW6cR5QCeRTh1PwBIQ6pnlUwjAiW0azXYISrL0DHkjB0JG8drAMv5kj6HkTteHCeqaFS0CFFu2qLQr5JfI/s200/1st+test+skein.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5105325062148315234" border="0" /></a></span></p> <p> </p> <p><span style="font-size:130%;">I took a sample skein and washed it. Not too bad. It looks lumpier in the picture than it really is because there's still a lot of kink from the locks. I think I like it. Next I'll have to do a little plying and see how that comes out. I don't have any specific project in mind, I'm going to make the best yarn I can and let that drive the choice of project.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:130%;">In the mean time, I've got a nice long weekend to play and I'm enjoying the process. This might be my best spinning yet. Which isn't saying much, but there has been progress!</span></p>Wendelenehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00390173211882355104noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-729212420721410141.post-84070516547199443832007-08-16T18:41:00.000-04:002007-08-16T19:43:15.889-04:00A Lost Week<span style="font-size:130%;">Wow, it's amazing how time zips right past when you're incredibly busy. There just may be something to this "having a life" thing!<br /><br />I spent last week zipping from work to dinner at a friends, to board meetings and finally to a night out. All very pleasant, especially the night out as there was music and beer involved, but also very tiring in the 100+ degree heat.<br /><br />Anyway, when we last saw our intrepid blogger, she promised to tell of an exciting event. Well, I'm maybe it wasn't exactly exciting, but it sure was a heck of a lot of fun. I, and I believe 9 other like minded souls, spent the morning at the <a href="http://www.charlestonmuseum.org/topic.asp?id=1">Charleston Museum.</a> In conjunction with their exhibit </span><span style="font-style: italic;font-size:130%;" >Clothes to Dye For</span><span style="font-size:130%;">, they held a natural dyeing workshop.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNUgj5l-JA6qF37TwOh1LSBLiw-OLnrk0-z_swbeHUHIsZEwwx0ujHnf_8pp9RSl2iQrYOzevDrMkxbqSrBMsHmVSzG8Ja-NBreuIvUqt2qOAjMKHBQ6mL0phXUbcSXQSB459eY5vGlRo/s1600-h/Suzanne.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNUgj5l-JA6qF37TwOh1LSBLiw-OLnrk0-z_swbeHUHIsZEwwx0ujHnf_8pp9RSl2iQrYOzevDrMkxbqSrBMsHmVSzG8Ja-NBreuIvUqt2qOAjMKHBQ6mL0phXUbcSXQSB459eY5vGlRo/s200/Suzanne.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5099436511661643714" border="0" /></a><br />Suzanne Collins was our teacher. This woman has lots and lots to say about natural dyeing. Her enthusiasm is downright contagious.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />After Suzanne spoke about some of the plants used, the colors they produce and how to prepare your yarn, we started the fun part. Lectures are nice and informative, I took lots of notes, but nothing beats getting to do it with your own hands. Here are the dyepots. We did cochenille (which I never knew are actually little bugs!) , onion skin, and the perennial favorite, indigo<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1asp2WzoBhyphenhyphenGsu8DFi3paI3JZNO8N1y2FnoDxlK8Jmc5be-ewsRpoHuJZOLkefDZ7hnHySeAs3MHMdRH8cLIB5XTsCecJWNgxTo10hgTar2AS2PSgzf9lbtHcPlwlKEeyf_3NrNeI-Ko/s1600-h/cochenille.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1asp2WzoBhyphenhyphenGsu8DFi3paI3JZNO8N1y2FnoDxlK8Jmc5be-ewsRpoHuJZOLkefDZ7hnHySeAs3MHMdRH8cLIB5XTsCecJWNgxTo10hgTar2AS2PSgzf9lbtHcPlwlKEeyf_3NrNeI-Ko/s200/cochenille.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5099438238238496722" border="0" /></a><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUbuaV8PjtHu9gyPfVAx8BGmPMb1IFyNQXl3FOGpKGJxDPo5taWkXi1Y29Tl76O8LPjPPhARIf6CEqM9XAN2BJ_VBgDWINK3iW37XUitMmenWa9Bknf_IAqr0xYHty720TnfzzpjqYuGk/s1600-h/onion.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUbuaV8PjtHu9gyPfVAx8BGmPMb1IFyNQXl3FOGpKGJxDPo5taWkXi1Y29Tl76O8LPjPPhARIf6CEqM9XAN2BJ_VBgDWINK3iW37XUitMmenWa9Bknf_IAqr0xYHty720TnfzzpjqYuGk/s200/onion.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5099438427217057778" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Even though I've seen it before, I'm still amazed at the color changes of indigo. I am making progress on both MS3 and Med Lace, but it's just more of the same, nothing dramatic.<br /><br />Mostly what I've been doing this last week is working out in the heat. I work as a facility manager on the Naval Weapons Station. My job was supposed to be a nice sit at a desk and play on the computer kind of job, but last week it took a turn. We needed someone to go out into the warehouse and onto current job sites and help keep the workers organized. The fun part is I get to boss around a bunch of guys, the down side is the 95+ degree heat and being in a poorly ventilated warehouse for a good portion of the day. By the time I get home and out of the shower (What's the Guinness record for longest time in a shower?) I don't have the ambition to do much of anything accept stare a book.<br /><br />The good news is that I have an outing planned for the weekend. Details then.<br /><br />Meanwhile, just so this isn't a totally photoless post, here's one of my attempts to take a picture of myself. I'll keep the day job.<br /></span>Wendelenehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00390173211882355104noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-729212420721410141.post-45212347975993666332007-07-22T15:26:00.000-04:002007-07-22T15:50:42.280-04:00What a difference a day makes<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaQbfqaxZERy7lkCOAuU6PDTypP48gODYqbJu8LDP2QaSxzAqRWQJpAKoHdBYkYmcATQ44cE3Nf8qCNvVHAZRNaZeX6aJx3ddzgNDjoR_bKu27aMSPUvwNdjjbh4VB3YR4uwelmSh4bwc/s1600-h/unfelted+tote.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaQbfqaxZERy7lkCOAuU6PDTypP48gODYqbJu8LDP2QaSxzAqRWQJpAKoHdBYkYmcATQ44cE3Nf8qCNvVHAZRNaZeX6aJx3ddzgNDjoR_bKu27aMSPUvwNdjjbh4VB3YR4uwelmSh4bwc/s200/unfelted+tote.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5090108022610092754" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">AHH, relief! While I have perfected the art of knitting and reading together - as long as it's a fairly simple pattern- nothing makes lace grow like some nice person (preferably with a British accent) reading me a story.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size:130%;">Thursday I read that two of <a href="http://www.yarnharlot.ca/blog/">The Yarn Harlot's</a> books were available at <a href="http://audible.com/">Audible</a>. I rushed right over and decided to splurge and just buy them rather than wait for my monthly subscription credit. Definitely a good idea. Stephanie does the reading, and while she may think she sounds like a chipmunk, I beg to differ. I knit and laughed and every time she began the sentence "You know you knit too much when...." I had to brace myself because at least half the time I had to say "Been there!" Buy the time the first book was done, I had finished more than two rows of the never ending shawl border. </span></p> <p><span style="font-size:130%;">A border progress shot </span></p> <p> </p> <p><span style="font-size:130%;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1y9QqfW1YPOhAJ7FngQv4kJfYyNpArzNreN1I_MIwlJ3Pzwzko5LSnEwT8chGSG1MG4i0yzBTqJrXJJ-G7jI1F53vphqyUvqG8U133t9rqE9BtiXoAjKa2xeD6Vcr5j134L3tXO2oFas/s1600-h/IMG_0162.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1y9QqfW1YPOhAJ7FngQv4kJfYyNpArzNreN1I_MIwlJ3Pzwzko5LSnEwT8chGSG1MG4i0yzBTqJrXJJ-G7jI1F53vphqyUvqG8U133t9rqE9BtiXoAjKa2xeD6Vcr5j134L3tXO2oFas/s200/IMG_0162.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5079412606374882242" border="0" /></a></span></p><p><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size:130%;">and a better shot of the main body<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXeJxOs0Ja7szGpYOGTqnmWJ5xJMPQzI9SqWnQJP6c70kg3Ft9EW-vXIljp2DQyG8RrVqDF9M-mTNIMHOM_91W_3GiX20dwTEa-4IzLRvY0fSQjO0od8k7LQFq4mpJzT4-EHdzwk4cJk0/s1600-h/IMG_0163.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXeJxOs0Ja7szGpYOGTqnmWJ5xJMPQzI9SqWnQJP6c70kg3Ft9EW-vXIljp2DQyG8RrVqDF9M-mTNIMHOM_91W_3GiX20dwTEa-4IzLRvY0fSQjO0od8k7LQFq4mpJzT4-EHdzwk4cJk0/s200/IMG_0163.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5079412614964816850" border="0" /></a></span></p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size:130%;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-size:130%;">Both the camera and photographing knitwork are new to me, so forgive the learning curve.</span></p>Wendelenehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00390173211882355104noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-729212420721410141.post-46881697102360961812007-06-16T16:59:00.001-04:002007-06-23T20:16:06.640-04:00My first post<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9XrXkAr75IjvJRsgO4gJTqwrfIx0JojmcyoKZW6GrNS52RkErU5FGUSkQE6GYhmNA06z5pDV2z8mPV4y9nSxbwVg9w0hyioPeqwPfy_BbytE_Ib1gnmbENPRtMpe0AmVi-_wQnOp8MIM/s1600-h/Knitting+Needle+Storage.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9XrXkAr75IjvJRsgO4gJTqwrfIx0JojmcyoKZW6GrNS52RkErU5FGUSkQE6GYhmNA06z5pDV2z8mPV4y9nSxbwVg9w0hyioPeqwPfy_BbytE_Ib1gnmbENPRtMpe0AmVi-_wQnOp8MIM/s200/Knitting+Needle+Storage.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5079415518362708978" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">Well here I am.
